The aim of oral hygiene

In order to prevent dental and gum disease, it is necessary to perform professional oral hygiene which aims at the following:

remove soft plaque;

remove solid plaque or tartar;

stop the development of dental caries, gum and periodontal disease;

refresh the oral cavity.

reinforce the resilience of dental surfaces against colorants found in fruit, berries, vegetables and coloured drinks (red wine, coffee, tea etc.)

The amount and need of professional oral hygiene procedures

Professional oral hygiene is performed during the course of one or several appointments. The optimum level for professional oral hygiene is twice a year. Constant oral care will help avoid issues caused by dental disease.

Dental hygienists at „Angitia“ recommend making your second appointment for professional oral hygiene in 6 months time – this will help establish your individual need for oral hygiene procedures. Every person‘s oral care is different: the time it takes for tartar to build up, lifestyle options, dietary requirements, quality of oral care, inherited dental resilience to environmental factors etc.

On the day of your appointment for professional oral hygiene, we recommend not to ingest the following foods afterwards: foods and drinks with colorants, e.g beets, bilberries, red wine, black coffee, tea etc.

The oral hygiene procedure

During the course of professional oral hygiene the following procedures are performed by our dental hygienists at Angitia:

Tartar build up is removed using an ultrasonic scaler

Soft plaque is removed using the state-of-the-art method, the Air Flow system. It‘s an excellent non-invasive way of removing tobacco, coffee and tea stains. The Air Flow method utilizes a strong stream consisting of a mixture of air, water and soda powder, thus quickly eliminating layers of plaque even in the most difficult to reach places.

Children‘s professional oral hygiene

Children should visit a dental hygienist around 6 years of age. Proper oral care skills developed in early childhood are the condition of healthy adult teeth.

The dental hygienist will help your child develop good oral and dental care skills: explain in a manner understandable to the child how to brush one‘s teeth, advise what toothpaste would be most suitable to the child‘s teeth.

We help patients of all ages to develop and improve proper oral care skills and fulfill a simple truth: health prevention is much more cost-effective and efficient than treatment. Teeth that are poorly looked after also develop diseases which are often dangerous and difficult to treat.
